Local people in need of rural housing can be sure that this is high on the government’s agenda and the proof was evident this week.

Candy Atherton, chair of the rural housing advisory group, called in on local housing association, Magna West Somerset (MWS).  The group, which looks at what can be done to remove barriers to building homes in rural areas, advises the government on improving the delivery of affordable rural housing.

During her visit Candy was particularly impressed with the Cutcombe Market development which will provide a brand new live stock market, energy efficient homes to rent and to buy and new business units to provide more employment in the area.  Some of the homes will be available for affordable rent through Magna West Somerset.

She said “This is a scheme which fits well into the local environment, helps the local economy by securing the future of the market in the area and provides new work opportunities and homes for local people”.

Tony Murray, director of Magna West Somerset Housing Association, said “I was pleased to be able to show Candy the market scheme and the plans for this mixed use development, sited in our National Park and supported by the local and parish councils and the local community”.

Whilst in the area, the delegation also visited new sheltered housing in Carhampton and mixed tenure homes in Washford.
